The Copa Libertadores is South America’s top club competition. It was created by CONMEBOL and first played in 1960, still under the name Copa de Campeones de América, won by Peñarol of Uruguay. In 1965 it became the Libertadores, in honour of the leaders of the continent’s wars of independence, such as Simón Bolívar and José de San Martín. Since then it has become a byword for passion, long journeys and high-altitude stadiums.
The list of champions brings together giants from several countries: Peñarol and Pelé’s Santos in the early years, Independiente, Boca Juniors and River Plate from Argentina, São Paulo, Corinthians, Flamengo and Palmeiras from Brazil, among others. Independiente were the first Argentine club to lift the trophy, in 1964, and the list also includes champions from countries such as Colombia and Ecuador, proof that the whole of South America has a place in its history.
A Libertadores prediction league lives on decisive matches: two-legged knockouts and a final. On WisePaul, each match locks at kick-off, results come in automatically and the table is recalculated after every match. The match score counts, with penalties shown separately, so a shoot-out in the big decisions does not muddle the points. Anyone joining while the competition is under way counts only the remaining matches.
It works well in a company with colleagues from several countries, in a family that supports different clubs or in a group of friends with plenty of scores to settle. Request your league and we set up the competition and the rules for you; the organiser gets access and an invite code to share with everyone.
